The Basildon and District Society of Association Football Referees was formed in 1957 and is now the second largest society in Essex.
It is part of the Essex Referees Association, which encompasses all seventeen Essex societies, and was formed 101 years ago.
The Basildon society's main aim is to recruit and promote football referees through the league system.
This consists of getting them through the exam, where they become a Class 3 referee and control Junior/Parks football.
Even at this level, anyone aged 16 or over can enhance his or her earning capabilities by £100-£130 per month.
By applying through the county footballing association, referees can then go on to achieve Class 2 status and eventually to Class 1, where if young enough, referees are placed into either the Jewson, Doctor Marten's or Ryman Leagues.
From there referees through their promotions systems to the Nationwide Conference, Nationwide League and eventually the Premier League. An elite band of referees are considered for the FIFA List.
In the past, Basildon have had two members reach those dizzy heights and at present (Spring 2000) the society has four referees knocking on the door of the Nationwide League.
