Introduction

What is Barbershop ?
It is a form of four part close harmony a-cappella, (unaccompanied), sang in a specific style which is known world wide as the barbershop style.
Chelmsford Star Harmony's favourite style of music is 'barbershop'. Barbershop quartet singing is an art form that began on street corners and in barbershops in the 1900's and continues to thrive today. As active participants in the British Association of Barbershop Singers, Chelmsford Star Harmony is eligible to sing in shows and to join in the fellowship of this great fraternal organization.
Definition -
Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied singing in which four voices harmonize to a melody. The voice parts are called tenor, lead, baritone and bass.
The lead usually sings the melody. The tenor harmonizes above the melody. The bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes and the baritone provides in-between notes, either above or below the lead, completing the chords that give barbershop its distinctive, four-part sound.
The style is further identified by the use of chords that are harmonious (pleasing!), the most famous of which is the barbershop seventh (a.k.a. dominant seventh). Tuning is as nearly perfect as is vocally possible. The style is distinguished by uniformity of word, sounds and a special emphasis on close harmony.
