This Beehive site concerns the activity of the Brentwood Choirs Festival. This organisation brings smaller choirs together to sing major works - which might be beyond the resources of these choirs. An objective of this site is to draw attention to the opportunity this organisation gives individuals to sing in events and possibly whole choirs to take part.
Haydn's Creation will be performed in 2010

Essex Choirs Combine in Great Works
|

 |
Essex is a centre of cultural excellence and there are many good choirs in the county. What is not always easily possible is the performance of larger works with full orchestral accompaniment. With this problem in mind, the Brentwood Choirs Festival was founded in 1991 as The Five Choirs Festival, on the initiative of David Taylor and Joyce Norris of Billericay Choral Society. As their conductor, David had collaborated at various times with Brentwood Cathedral Singers, Brentwood Choral Society, Ingatestone Choral Society and with the Brentwood School Choir. Joyce Norris took on the organisation of a Festival involving all these singers and continued to cast her organisational spell over it for the next ten years. The works have usually been chosen to enable individual choirs to sing works which they might find impossible by themselves.
The Festival was planned to take place biennially in November, to be conducted in turn by the conductors of the individual choirs. From the beginning it was possible to take advantage of the rebuilding of Brentwood Cathedral, finished by May 1991, and of its splendid new organ. Because the Five Choirs title was found to be somewhat limiting, it was changed in 2005 to the Brentwood Choirs Festival with the same aims and ambitions and continued success.
A list of the choirs which have taken part, details of the works played and the conductors is given on a separate page linked top left. From this list it can be seen that, for various reasons, not all choirs have been able to take part in every Festival. Some choirs have the same conductors as in 1991, others have changed. Links to the websites of participating choirs are given on the page accessed top left.
From 2010 it is the intention to introduce an additional Festival in May, in the intervening years, and so this year there wasbe a successful performance of Haydn's popular Creation.
The Aurelian Orchestra has contributed to most Festivals Since they are a professional group this was easier when financial backing was less difficult to come by. For the concert on May 15th 2010 the orchestra was the Essex Symphony Orchestra an amateur group with a high reputation The ESO accompanied choirs for many years at the Essex Musical Association's Combined Choirs Festival.
