Greenflies can cause immense damage to plants. They suck at the plants, creating deformities. They also secrete a sugary substance called honeydew, which contains the excess sugars they have absorbed. This supports the growth of a fungus called sooty mould, which has a black patchy appearance.
The greenflies have often already disappeared before the sooty mould is noticeable, so the connection is not always evident. Sooty mould hinders the growth of a plant as it obstructs sunlight.

Control
Natural enemies of greenflies are ladybird larvae, hoverfly larvae, gall-fly larvae, lacewings and earwigs. Of course, chemical pesticides are available, but you should consider that these kill the natural enemies as well!
A greenfly infestation can be subdued in the early stages by removing the affected stems or by spraying the plants with a firm jet of water.
