In the early 1980’s there was little support for people with mental ill-health. Members of Mind saw the need for a day centre in Chelmsford and campaigned for facilities. The Dove Centre was opened in 1984 to meet this need.
It is funded jointly by the Health Authority, and Social Services and receives donations from the Chelmsford Mind Association and other charities. It has an Executive Committee on which centre users and volunteers are represented.
The Dove Centre is staffed by a small group of professional workers and administrative staff, with the assistance of volunteers who are trained, supervised and supported by a Volunteer Co-ordinator.
